Start with the audience, not the influencer
The conventional brief begins with a shortlist of creators. We start at the other end: analyse the target audience psychographically, behaviourally and through sentiment, then work backwards to the key opinion consumers and leaders inside their trust networks.
The result is usually a very different roster — smaller accounts with far stronger topical credibility — and a messaging strategy grounded in what the audience already believes rather than what the brand wants to say.
Place influencer types by funnel stage
Treating all creators as interchangeable reach is the most common source of wasted budget. Different stages need different voices.
- Awareness: macro influencers to populate the funnel.
- Consideration: specialised micro influencers who can educate credibly.
- Intent and conversion: KOCs and peers whose recommendations are trusted.
- Loyalty and referral: KOCs sustaining advocacy after purchase.
Measure business outcomes, not vanity metrics
Multi-touch attribution across impressions, engagements, site visits and conversions is what makes influencer spend defensible in a boardroom. Reporting should land on customer acquisition cost and lifetime value, with engagement metrics as diagnostics rather than headlines.
AXA Thailand's micro-insurance campaign is a useful benchmark for what disciplined measurement surfaces: 400,000 users engaged, a 2% click-through rate, 5,600 qualified leads and a 70% conversion rate from a ten-week nano and micro influencer programme.
Protect the brand while you scale
Scaling to hundreds of small creators raises real safety questions. Vetting and verification, content moderation, sentiment monitoring and fraud detection for bot engagement are not optional extras at that volume — they are what makes the model usable for regulated and reputation-sensitive categories.
Done properly, word-of-mouth at scale becomes a repeatable growth channel rather than a series of one-off activations. Clear briefing, approval workflows and live performance monitoring give creators room to sound authentic while helping brand teams identify risks early and protect the standards that matter. Regular reviews should compare creator quality, audience response and commercial outcomes, allowing the strongest partnerships to grow while weak or risky activity is removed quickly.
